WASHINGTON — After promising to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court, President Joe Biden announced Ketanji Brown Jackson as his pick on Friday morning.
Jackson has been confirmed by the United States Senate three times, and is currently serving on the United State Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. She was a law clerk for Justice Stephen Breyer, who, if confirmed, she will replace.
On Friday evening, activists, students and individuals of all ages came together to celebrate Jackson’s nomination, emphasizing the work needed to be done to achieve her confirmation in the Senate. Participants encouraged the crowd to take action, including calling their Senators and asking them to vote in favor of Jackson.
Many participants also emphasized the historical significance of the moment, as Jackson is the first Black woman nominated to the nation’s highest court.
“(I’m) elated about the choice, but I would’ve been elated with any one of the choices of the three justices that were floating around for consideration,” said rally attendee Charmion Kinder. “It’s a great day for all of America, not just Black America.”
