MANCHESTER, Md. — For Laura Araujo, a U.S. citizen and mother of five, every FaceTime with her husband Alberto is more than just a call: it’s a reminder of the 10 long years they must spend apart until Alberto is allowed to return to her and their children because of a decades-old immigration law. 

As one of 22 million people living in mixed-status households — families of mixed immigration standing — Araujo is fighting to change that.
