Republicans blame Democrats for holding the government hostage in efforts to push through health care funding provisions.
Democrats criticized Republicans for rising health care costs, passed in the One Big Beautiful earlier this year. The Congressional Budget Office estimates increased health insurance premiums could impact nearly 24 million people, and 16 million more would lose their health insurance in the next decade.
The GOP wants a clean stopgap funding bill to keep the government open until November.
“There isn’t anything here to negotiate,” Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said. “This is a continuing resolution to keep the government open so we can continue our appropriations work.”
“Republicans are not serious about keeping [the government] open,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said.
